All gym members receive personalized instruction, coaching and training in an open gym format (no classes) to allow for maximum personal attention. All gym johnbw.jpgmembers train with us as their schedules and plans allow.

All membership plans include:

Classes/Courses

The following classes/courses are open to the public but require advanced registration:

Our coaches-only course, The Art and Science of Coaching Weightlifting, combines the best available science with coaching methods we've tested and refined through decades of experience. Upon completion of the course, you will understand how to better coach the Olympic lifts with athletes of all experience levels. Click here for course details.


Instructional Clinics/Seminars

Our Coaches

Sean is the owner and head coach of Waxman's Gym and the head coach of the Waxman's Gym Weightlifting team. Sean has been a professional coach for over 18 years and a world-class Olympic weightlifter. Nobody in Southern California has Sean's winning combination of education, Olympic weightlifting experience, and strength coaching experience/success.

Sean received his Bachelors of Science in Physical Education from Cortland State and did his graduate work at Long Beach State in kinesiology, biomechanics, and exercise science. He spent more than a decade studying, training, and coaching under the direction and guidance of USAW Hall of Fame Coach Bob Takano and NSCA Hall of Fame Strength Coach Dr. John Garhammer. Sean is a former USA Weightlifting National Team member, national medal winner, and five-time California State Weightlifting champion. Sean has coached/trained athletes from virtually every sport at levels ranging from high school through professional.

Ashley is co-head coach with Waxman's Gym and a current national weightlifting competitor with ten years of Olympic lifting experience. She has trained as an athlete and a coach under the direction of world-class coaches John Garhammer, Sean Waxman, Bob Takano and Mike Burgener. Ashley's specialties include teaching barbell and Olympic lifting technique to beginners, refining technique of experienced lifters, and training other coaches to teach the Olympic lifts.

Adam Townsend

Adam has been a coach for nearly two decades. He has been performing and coaching the Olympic lifts for more than 6 years, most recently spending the past year under the direction of Sean Waxman. He also teaches martial arts, crossfit, and weightlifting at several local gyms. His specialties include teaching beginners and groups. He also has a keen eye and a unique ability to identify and correct complex movement problems.

Don Ricci

Don has trained and coached under the direction of Sean Waxman and Ursula Garza Papandrea and is currently a member of the Waxman's Gym weightlifting team. Don has served as the strength coach for Loyola High School's water polo team and was an Intern Strength & Conditioning coach at USC where he oversaw the Women's Crew team as well as assisted with 8 other teams, including football. Additionally, Don has spent time coaching at two of the more prestigious crossfit gyms in the country, CrossFit LA and CrossFit Central. Don's specialities include coaching groups and teams as well as teaching and coaching barbell and Olympic weightlifting technique to beginner athletes, crossfitters and weightlifters. Don is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (C.S.C.S.) through the NSCA and a USAW L1 Sports Performance Coach. Prior to coaching, Don was an All-American water polo goalie and two-time national champion at USC.

John Garhammer

John is a special advisor to the Waxman's Gym weightlifting team.
